When it comes to designing covers for a new series, there

It turns out I cannot review this series without comparing it to Hunger Games. There is a great deal of similarity between this series and Hunger Games. Teenage coming-of-age adventure story in a post-apocalyptic dystopian society.

I could go further into the premise, but it really does not make much sense outside the context of the book. Again, like Hunger Games, I found the first book gripping and devoured it quickly. The second book did a good job of keeping up that pace. Then the third book comes up, and, once again like Hunger Games, it takes the "Us vs.

Them" story and throws in "oh look, These Guys Too! Bet you didn't see THAT coming!

The first two books seem to be building your hope for the characters and the world they live in and the ability for them to make the world better. Then they expand the world, and the third book goes about crushing your hopes of a happy ending. While reading the first two books, I was a little bummed that it would be over in three. By the time I was about a quarter through the third book, I was ready for it to be done. I was looking forward to Four during the first two books.

After reading the third, I don't have any real interest in reading Four anymore. The real world does not have happy endings for everyone, but this isn't really about happy endings. It is more about building up these characters to great heights with the implication that they will usher in a new age. Then, it turns out in the end they are a cog in a machine in the end. Important, sure, but used to an end just the same.

I would actually rate the first two books at five stars, but the third book is such a letdown that it brings down the whole series for me, and this book is useless without the other two. If you read Hunger Games and loved it, this scratches the same itch. In the end, I didn't hate it, but it lost a lot of luster quickly in the end. I have to start by saying that watching the Divergent movie made me want to read the book. I really enjoyed the movie and I thought for sure there was more in the book.

Beatrice is about to take the test that will determine which of the five factions she will go into for the rest of her life. The five factions are: Candor the honest , Amity the peaceful , Erudite the intelligent , Dauntless the brave and Abnegation the selfless. Each of the factions carries out certain job throughout the city.

Those without factions do all the dirty work and have no rights in society. Born into Abnegation, everyone thinks she will stay in. On the day of the test, Beatrice learns she is Divergent.

Fitting into not just one, but many factions. She chooses Dauntless and is told to keep her Divergent identity secret. In dauntless Beatrice renames herself Tris, and she is tested to determine who she really is. Her failure could leave her factionless.

Being divergent might just get her killed. I could completely picture the scenes while I read this book. There were only a few details left out of the movie Divergent. This book was really addictive. The development of her relationship to Four made much more sense in the book and he was instrumental in the end. I really enjoyed the character building, getting to know her friends and her fears. The author is able to draw in the reader right from the start. The location of this story is a dytopian Chicago.

I liked the gradual world building in this story. The whole society is cut off from the outside. The idea that people are either of 5 personalities was really problematic for divergents because they have characteristics from more than one. The struggle to pick just one thing for the rest of your life is something a lot of young adults can probably relate to as they make career choices, so this story may feel close to home. I hate him and how was his Choosing Ceremony and how he felt about it. How did he make up his mind about which faction he would choose. Sep 05, Ferdy rated it it was ok Shelves: The storyline was decent enough with Tobias wanting to escape his abusive dad, thus transferring to Dauntless, and then jumping off trains and buildings to prove himself, and finally facing his fears in a scientifically nonsensical simulation.

I really wasn't impressed with Four's narration — his voice was too dull and predictable, and it ruined the story. I predict that he'll probably fall for a fellow Dauntless initiate in one of his future novella 2. I predict that he'll probably fall for a fellow Dauntless initiate in one of his future novellas, and then she'll die or some rubbish.

I hope that doesn't happen though, it's way too cliched. Jan 29, Mariah Roze rated it really liked it. Right now I am reading Four: A Divergent Story Collection Divergent, 0. It has been an long time since I read the Divergent series, so it is nice getting back into it: This was all "Four" and i enjoyed it immensely!

It's a great intro to a fascinating world.. I haven't read the other books yet, i only saw the movie and read the tie in companion at this point, but i can tell when something is good and interesting.. This is a short story but it's so full and whole, it makes you crave more and at the same time it's complete in its own way.. Tobias had a hard life because of his father Marcus. He abused him for a long time and now is finally the moment for This was all "Four" and i enjoyed it immensely!

He abused him for a long time and now is finally the moment for that to change.. He makes a decision that will alter his existence forever and keep his abusive father away for good..

We have a chance to watch him struggle with his choise and we have a chance to see what Tobias Eaton was, before Dauntless.. View all 10 comments. Apr 15, Aqsa rated it it was amazing Shelves: This was strangely fun: Great opportunity to learn something new about Four.

Unfortunately, there's not much. Just Four's badassessness. And even if that's no small thing, I really wished for an awesome revelation or something exciting to happen. That said, it was so refreshing to meet again the Four I fell in love with in Divergent and not that weird teenager I found in Insurgent.

It delivered, a nice reminded of who Tobias was and how he became my first book crush. He was tough, strong even when his father was Well He was tough, strong even when his father was such a jerk and determined to rewrite his own story.

Oh, Veronica Roth. I'm not sure if I'm ready to step in Allegiant. View 2 comments.

Sep 11, Ari rated it really liked it Shelves: It's a fact that Four is my favorite character in the series and reading a bit about his past makes me understand him more.

It is not that we find something new , not at all, but it's his voice with his insecurities and hopes and fears. You see two sides of him - the boy he was and the transfer he is now, one that can decide who he wants to be, how the others will see him, accept him, respect him..

Aug 15, Bethan Watson rated it really liked it Shelves: I loved reading from Tobias' point of view. He was my favourite character!

I think he had much more depth than anyone else and if anything, I don't think Roth delved deep enough for my liking. View 1 comment. Jul 08, Mai is a Happy Bibliophile rated it it was amazing Shelves: My reaction while reading: Can you freaking believe it??!! Tobias Eaton is probably one of the most coveted, crushed-on, daydreamed-on male YA character today. His mysterious badass vibe made its first steamy appearance way back on Divergent. The first novella written i "My name is Four.

The first novella written in Four's perspective was Free Four: Tobias Tells the Story in which he described his feelings when he first met Abnegation-transfer Tris Prior. In this new novella comprised of like 50 pages, Tobias Eaton told his story as an Abnegation-born and the rules he had to live by with his father. He is a good narrator and I can personally feel his pain and fears while telling his story. I can't help but hate Marcus for inflicting him pain and even thought he could condition Tobias's mind to stay on his faction.

Readers will also have a look on his Dauntless initiation and how he came to be called 'Four'. I can't wait for the next novella.

More Four! Jun 17, Denisse rated it it was ok. It doesn't tell anything new. What a waste of time. Insisto, hubiera sido mejor 4 historias cortas de otros 4 personajes.. Ya chole con Cuatro.

Que ganas las de Roth de besarle el trasero. Feb 09, Sh3lly GrumpyBookGrrrl. I just read this tonight and it reminded me fondly of the good old days before in my view Veronica Roth messed everything up in Allegiant. I love Four - And his "origins" story was nice to read. The only thing I can say is that Veronica Roth still doesn't do well with distinguishing POVs; Four still sounds about the same as if we were hearing from Tris.

Four is just great, though. View all 5 comments. Aug 10, Marla Mei rated it really liked it Shelves: I don't know about you guys but this novella is four-fect! See what I did there? This is too much. It's just way to long from now But anyway, back to my review of this amazingly awesome book.

Look Marcus you just need to stop beating your son okay? Like he is the best thing that has ever happened to the world. I was just like this, when I heard Marcus's name in "The Transfer. Overall rating 4. Yes No Thanks for your feedback! Report as inappropriate. Divergent is my favourite book ever. It's action packed, exciting, and romantic. I literally could not put it down. I've read divergent at least 7 times and it still just as exciting as the first.

Highly recommend this book. Great book! Super easy to read and follow.

If you liked the Hunger Games books, you will love this series! Only reason that I didn't give it 5 stars, was at some points, I found it a little drawn out, and a bit hard to stay concentrated on the book!

But if you get past those very few moments, you will fall in love with all of the characters! I even found myself tearing up! This is one of my favourite books of all time!

I thought that the book would focus more on what faction Tris would decide to choose but it didn't!

By the fifth chapter or so, Tris has chosen her faction and the remainder of the book focuses on her initiation training with that faction. The action keeps you hooked from the beginning, and once you start you won't be able to put it down. I highly recommend this book to anyone! My niece got this book for us to read together. Without knowing what it was we started reading it.

Since I had no expectations I was able to simply enjoy the book. The author did not pull punches, there are moments where the story is gruesome, there are characters to love, and those to hate. It is definitely a book that makes the reader think, What faction would you have chosen? Would you have had Tris' strength? How difficult is it to be a parent in this type of society? All in all I highly recommend this book to others, and have done so with my own friends.

And hard-working people can certainly take their work too far, as all the factions do with their respective virtues.

The factions are Abnegation to uphold selflessness, Amity to uphold peacefulness, Candor to uphold honesty, Dauntless to uphold bravery, and Erudite, to uphold knowledge. She chooses Dauntless and is told to keep her Divergent identity secret. That sounds good to me.
